Close encounter with southern rights in the bay
Early in August a group of tourists on Look Sharp, one of St Francis Whale Watching’s boats, experienced a very close encounter with three southern right whales in our Bay. Local photographer Martin Barbour was on another boat ready to take these lovely photographs. At the moment there are at least 7 southern right whales in the Bay. The St Francis Sustainable Seas Centre’s opening on 9 November was a great event and big success, with the highlight of the evening the talk given by the guest speaker, adventurer Pete van Kets. He had the audience captured for the shortest hour ever, and everyone left with a personal message. Pete has twice rowed the Atlantic ocean in unsupported races, and also finished the race to the South Pole in January this year. This year was the leanest year in the history of tuna fishing, Tim Christy from the St Francis Rod Reel and Boat Club said, presenting the Rodman Grand Slam Trophies. These trophies are awarded to the anglers catching the heaviest fish during the Tuna Classic (Port Elizabeth), the Vangie-Tannie (Jeffreys Bay) and the Port St Francis Skiboat Club’s ‘Tuna & Marlin Challenge.
